The world’s largest avionics exhibition is bigger than ever this year, spotlighting not only the newest developments in cockpit technology, but also, in a special workshop, modernization programs proposed to assure existing commercial aircraft can operate in tomorrow’s airspace.
Officials from both Airbus and Boeing will share their companies’ plans for cockpit retrofit in fielded aircraft, in a workshop presented at Avionics08, to be held March 5-6 in the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) conference center in Amsterdam. The workshop will be one among eight workshops, plus four master classes, which also cover topics such as electronics for unmanned air vehicles (UAVs), commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) and embedded avionics systems.
The cockpit-modernization workshop will complement the two-day conference, which follows the theme “Operating in Tomorrow’s Airspace,” and will cover such topics as required navigation and communication performance (RNP and RCP), enhanced and synthetic vision, new flight management system (FMS) technology, automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B), GPS landing systems (GLS) and surface movement monitoring. The Airbus and Boeing officials will reveal how these and other new capabilities, which will be incorporated in new-design aircraft, can be retrofitted in aircraft currently in operation.
Speakers at the conference will include officials from avionics and airframe manufacturers; aircraft operators, both military and civil; the research/academic community; associations, including the International Air Line Pilots Association (IFALPA), and the regulatory community, including FAA, Eurcontrol and ICAO. There also will be speakers addressing military avionics, for example, from Eurofighter and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program office.
The 6th annual Avionics exhibition also will have close to 90 exhibitors, more than in years past. And it has pre-registered participants from more than 105 countries, making it truly an international event. A gala dinner March 5 aboard a cruise boat will give Avionics08 attendees the opportunity to “network” with fellow professionals while also eating a fine meal and enjoying the Amsterdam skyline.
