| | And, thanks to a recent conversation CompactPCI and AdvancedTCA Systems editorial director Joe Pavlat had with John Fryer, director of technology marketing at Emerson Network Power Embedded Computing (formerly Motorola Inc., Embedded Communications Computing), answers are forthcoming as well. |
Day 2 here are ISA Expo, mostly networking topics today.
In the interest of full disclosure, I spent 14 years in sales and marketing at what was the Motorola Computer Group, and I’m now about 3 years removed. It’s been a long and arduous road from what was for many years the #1 vendor in VMEbus to what this business now becomes as part of Emerson.
It doesn’t take long for interesting stuff to show up at Embedded Systems Conference, and there’ll be lots more I’ll be talking about in the next few days. Here are some quick notes from the first presser I sat in on featuring Quadros Systems, Coverity, ANT, QNX, Ampro, and Amphenol:
That seems to be the case for RadiSys, which recently announced the results of some shopping, that is, its agreement to acquire Intel’s Modular Communications Platforms (MCP) AdvancedTCA, CompactPCI, and legacy business assets.
InHand Electronics is announcing a low power, mil-spec PDA called the Soldier Flex PDA at this week’s Embedded Systems Conference in Boston.
There’s a new choice for open source microkernels – QNX Neutrino.
AMD’s announcement of the “Barcelona”, officially the Quad-Core AMD Opteron, goes right after Design for Energy Efficiency at the very high end of our embedded space. AMD has introduced something they call Average Core Power (ACP), trying to characterize power draw when a system is actually working doing real stuff. The new device was introduced at 55W and 75W ACP points.
Palm has mercifully ended current plans for the Foleo, which was supposed to be a Linux-based gadget augmenting a Treo to give users a 10-inch screen and full size keyboard, along with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, but not a hard drive.
Tail-f Systems, a software developer of XML-based network management solutions, is the newest member of the Service Availability Forum (SA Forum). SA Forum Member Relations Officer Henry Turko of Nokia Siemens Networks commented to me that with Tail-f Systems joining, the SA Forum gains additional resources to support the Forum’s work in high-level element management. “Adding Tail-f Systems broadens the Forum’s perspective regarding network configuration management,” he said.
