Fujitsu Announces New Graphics Controller for Automotive and Industrial Embedded Display Systems

OpenGL ES 2.0 GPU for high-level graphics in automotive applications

Langen and Nürnberg, March 3rd 2009: Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe (FME) is pleased to announce the expansion of its graphics controllers family with the MB86298 ‘Ruby’ – a highly integrated high-end graphics processing unit (GPU) specified for OpenGL® ES 2.0 targeting embedded automotive and industrial display systems.

The feature set and performance of the MB86298 targets in-car applications such as dashboard systems (hybrid/virtual), head-up displays, navigation systems and rear-seat entertainment applications providing OpenGL ES 2.0/OpenVGTM 1.0 functionality.

Designed in 90nm technology, the MB86298 provides high-performance 3D-rendering functions. Like its successful predecessors, this chip is designed for applications using an overlay of computer graphics and Video data. The rendering engine incorporates a programmable unified shader architecture to align with the OpenGL ES 2.0 standard for user-specific operations on vertices and fragments. The pipeline structure in the integrated shader unit is configurable to use high-level geometry, colour and lighting algorithms for full-scene anti-aliased (FSAA) image generation.

The integrated video capture module interfaces to four parallel external devices providing ITU-R BT 601/656, DRGB 888 (up to 1280 pixel horizontal resolution) and SMTPE 296M format data. Frame rate conversion, colour conversion, up-scaling, down-scaling and adaptive de-interlacing functions are also supplied by the capture module.

With its state-of-the-art host and memory interfaces, the MB86298 ‘Ruby’ provides the necessary bandwidth for data throughput required for next generation high-end graphics applications. The host link is a full-duplex PCIe interface that can be connected to a big or little-endian CPU.

The dual-display output unit can be freely programmed to support display panels with resolutions up to 1400 x 1050 pixels (or widescreens up to 1600 x 600 pixels) and provides enhanced functions such as gamma correction and dithering for colour adjustment, depending on specific display requirements. The unit also offers support for dual-view displays enabling applications such as in-car head-units with different information visible for the driver and passenger on the same screen.

Fast access to the graphics memory is provided by the integrated memory controller. Up to 512MB of external DDR2 800 memory can be addressed using a 64-bit or 32-bit interface bus.

The integrated spread spectrum clock generator (SSCG) unit ensures reduced electromagnetic interference (EMI) using minimal clock modulation.

The chip is supplied in a TEBGA543 package, thermally enhanced to provide improved heat-spreading to the environment compared with a plastic BGA package.

The built-in JTAG interface (compliant to IEEE 1149.1) is a boundary scan test interface used for checking the reliability of the chip when mounted on the PCB.

The MB86298 will be qualified according to automotive quality level AECQ100 for an extended temperature range of -40 to +85°C.

Availability

Sample quantities of MB86298 ‘Ruby’ will be available from Q2 2009. A dedicated evaluation board, software drivers for QNX, Linux and Windows and sample programs will also be offered in this timeframe.
