Vecima Partners with Mocana to Secure Broad Range of WaveRider 900 MHz OFDM Broadband Wireless Products
SAN FRANCISCO - January 19, 2010 - Vecima Networks Inc. (TSX: VCM), a leading supplier of broadband wireless solutions today announced they had selected Mocana’s NanoSSL software (www.mocana.com/nanossl.html) to secure the LMS8000 series of their popular WaveRider 900 MHz broadband access systems. Mocana embedded security within the WaveRider platform protects the equipment and operators from unauthorized access by authenticating and encrypting management connections.
Featuring OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) technology and incorporating the superior WaveRider Dynamic Polling MAC, the Mocana-secured LMS8000 Series is specifically designed to enable network operators to fully exploit the non-line of-sight advantages of the 900 MHz band. The WaveRider LMS8000 900 MHz Series provides industry leading throughput and subscriber capacity. Based on price and performance, the LMS8000 allows Wireless Internet Service Providers to offer the most competitive 900 MHz broadband services in their markets, while still providing robust Mocana NanoSSL encryption and authentication protection for operators.
NanoSSL is Mocana's super fast, super small SSL/TLS solution specifically designed to speed product development while providing best-in-class device security services for resource-constrained environments. NanoSSL is open-standards based, extensible, extremely small footprint, platform-agnostic and includes an optional government-certified FIPS 140-2 level-1- validated crypto core. NanoSSL includes a full-featured key generator and certificate management client, and even supports Government Suite B crypto algorithms and the new RFC standard for TLS 1.2. Free source code evaluations of NanoSSL are available to developers at www.mocana.com/evaluate.html.
“Mocana’s NanoSSL server software was much faster and smaller than open-source alternatives,” said Douglas Fast, President of Spectrum Signal/WaveRider by Vecima. "We wanted robust security features for these products that wouldn’t degrade performance. Plus we had to be sure that the code and the crypto were professional-grade, because these devices were going out into the field for a long time. Mocana’s embedded security expertise and focus on non-PC devices made them the obvious choice."
Vecima’s LMS8000 offers over-the-air data rates of up to 13.5 Mbps and user access speeds up to 8 Mbps in a 5.5MHz channel. This increased throughput along with the superior Dynamic Polling MAC significantly increases capacity and enables operators to offer higher tiered subscriber pricing models and services including VoIP. Operators have quickly realized significantly higher ROI based on the WaveRider’s features and performance as the new product has rolled out over the past year. Vecima is bundling the Mocana device integrity functionality into most Vecima LMS8000 family product offerings, including the LMS8000 Starter Kit, the CCU8000 900 MHz Base Station with PoE, the CCU8010 900 MHz Low Cost Base Station with PoE, the EUM8000 900 MHz Outdoor Modem with Integrated 10dBi Dual-Polarity Diversity Antenna, the EUM8005 900 MHz Plug & Play Indoor Modem and the EUM8012 900 MHz Outdoor Modem with Integrated 12.5dBi Flat Panel Antenna.
Adaptive Modulation automatically ensures the best data rate the channel can support is used at all times. Separately for each link, the base station and subscriber stations determine the most efficient modulation scheme to transmit, adapting continuously to changing channel conditions. This key new feature greatly enhances system capacity without operator intervention.
“The new WaveRider LMS8000 Series with integrated Mocana security, combined with the WaveRider 5.8 GHz and 4.9 GHz point-to-point and point-to-multipoint backhaul products, offer leading edge power and simplicity,” said Adrian Turner, Mocana’s President and CEO. “With the inclusion of Mocana’s best-in-class device integrity features, the WaveRider product family is the perfect workhorse for a wide array of users including wireless Internet service providers, public safety organizations, municipalities, enterprises and even the military.”

About Vecima Networks
Vecima Networks Inc. (TSX: VCM) designs, manufactures and sells products that enable broadband access to cable, wireless and telephony networks. Vecima's hardware products incorporate original embedded software to meet the complex requirements of next-generation, high-speed digital networks. Service providers use Vecima's solutions to deliver services to a converging worldwide broadband market, including what are commonly known as "triple play" (voice, video and data) and "quadruple play" (voice, video, data and wireless) services. Vecima's solutions allow service providers to rapidly and cost-effectively bridge the final network segment that connects the system directly to end users, commonly referred to as "the last mile", by overcoming the bottleneck resulting from insufficient carrying capacity in legacy, last mile infrastructures. Vecima's products are directed at two principal markets: Converged Wired Solutions and Broadband Wireless. The Company has also developed and continues to focus on developing products to address emerging markets such as Voice over Internet Protocol, fibre to the home and IP video.
