embedded world 2017: Low-power Micro Crystal 32.768-kHz oscillator module fits in tiny package

Micro Crystal now offers oscillators in advanced tiny packages, measuring just 1.2 by 2.0 by 0.7 mm. This hermetically sealed package hosts the IC together with the XTAL. It withstands harsh environmental condition.

Aside from the large supply voltage range, it features low power consumption. In active mode, it draws as low as 1 μA driving one CMOS load. Since the oscillator is also running in stand-by mode (i= 0.45 μA), the accurate frequency is available instantaneously, with no delayed startup time, which is often found in AT-. Through factory calibration, the accuracy is superior to solutions with external XTAL.

The wide supply voltage range of 1.6 to 5.5 V combined with the large operating temperature range of -40°C to + 85°C, low power consumption, and small package size suits the oscillator for the following applications:

  • wearables and activity bands
  • smart pens
  • Industrial computing, single-board controller
  • health care devices
  • clock sources, when combined with Bluetooth LE
  • emergency call units, remote keyless entry systems (with automotive-grade parts)
