New tools and design flow automatically synchronizes Embedded Linux to target new Xilinx embedded design platforms
Brisbane, Queensland – December 8, 2009 – PetaLogix, the experts in service, product and training solutions for Embedded Linux on field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), today announced PetaLinuxTM SDK, a new system development software product enabling electronic design engineers to build, customize and employ Embedded Linux on Xilinx (NASDAQ: XLNX) FPGA-based embedded processor applications. Introduced in conjunction with today’s design kit introduction from Xilinx, the PetaLinux SDK is the first and only commercially available Embedded Linux development environment specifically designed for FPGA-based embedded systems.
PetaLinux is unique in embracing the flexibility of FPGA-based embedded systems where the hardware platform is customized to suit the particular design application. It improves on competing options by integrating with the Xilinx embedded design flow to manage and largely automate the creation and customization of Embedded Linux in electronic systems. PetaLinux includes a full system simulator that is automatically configured to match the target embedded system architecture, allowing advanced development of the customer’s Embedded Linux platform and software stack before the users’ hardware boards are available. “PetaLinux is a compelling addition to the Xilinx Embedded ecosystem enabling application development in Industrial, Medical, Aerospace and Defense and more using the MicroBlaze processor.” said Xilinx Director of Platform Marketing Brent Przybus. “Xilinx Embedded Kits enable software developers to quickly evaluate FPGA-based embedded processing and embrace hardware flexibility through Xilinx Targeted Reference Designs. PetaLinux development tools compliment this strategy by enabling embedded Linux based applications using the same kits”.
Typical applications for PetaLinux include industrial test, measurement, control, control-plane applications for video broadcast, wireless communications and networking system designs where the processing power and design flexibility of FPGAs are required and designers wish to exploit the benefits of Embedded Linux as the software operating system.
“Embedded Linux and FPGA-based embedded processing have changed the way electronic products are designed and built. PetaLinux will drive and boost the adoption of embedded processing in FPGAs by offering a compelling Embedded Linux design platform,” said John Williams, PetaLogix CEO.”By targeting the intersection of these two game-changing technologies, PetaLinux enables designers to exploit the functionality and customization opportunities of both FPGA-based systems, and Embedded Linux.”
