Firewall-in-a-Box

EMAC, Inc. — April 2001

Firewall-in-a-Box

A fanless, small-footprint firewall that can securely share connections among several workstations or servers

  • Based on a customized Linux distribution, the Firewall-in-a-Box (FIB) can control data flow over an optional analog modem, a cable modem, or digital subscriber line
  • Can assign IP addresses dynamically to both client machines (DHCP) and can provide a caching domain name (DNS) service
  • Internet servers can be placed behind the firewall using port forwarding
  • Uses a low-voltage NS Geode GXLV-200 processor and 50-watt power supply, neither of which requires a fan
  • Contains no moving parts
  • Menu-based configuration utility is accessible locally through terminal ports, point-to-point Internet connections, Ethernet/LAN settings, and firewall/port forwarding functions
  • Both telnet and FTP servers can be disabled for additional security
  • Includes software and scripts that allow both outgoing and incoming modem connections
  • Connections may be remote terminal sessions or point-to-point connections
  • Dial-in terminal sessions allow configuration and management of the FIB as though the data were input directly from a local keyboard
  • PPP connection allows the FIB to function as a dial-in server
  • Dial-out terminal sessions can be executed either on command or as part of an automated script
  • Standard UNIX periodic command scheduler included
